What do we mean by intention? In implementing a strategy, we can consider it to be the goal or purpose. It means that it is something you planned or mean to do, whether you pull it off or not according to vocabulary.com This definition speaks directly to what we are saying. Having good intentions does not mean the goal, purpose or expected outcome will be achieved because the strategy chosen was done so with good intentions. Any strategy needs to be planned out thoroughly, implemented carefully and timely.

Good intentions must be detailed in thought and, and reiterated in documentation. This becomes the rationale for why the strategy makes sense. Good intentions will not guarantee success in achieving the desired, expected or intended outcomes if planning is not thorough. Realizing a good strategy is determining benchmarks for the monitoring achievement toward the intended outcomes. The determination of and the analysis of the benchmarks are good intentions to the overall implementation of the strategy.

Benchmarks relate to performance. They are considered to be a performance indicator or key performance indicator (KPI) that is a type of measurement of performance. These are the details that will support the strategy as being optimal while assuring good intentions for success occur. The implementation of the strategy must include monitoring in a timely manner so that adjustments can be made. Well intended monitoring keeps your strategy’s integrity.

The outcomes of your strategy will be measured against the selected benchmarks. Achieving benchmarks for the duration of implementation of the strategy, leading to achieving the desired outcomes, proves the intended strategy was appropriate! It led to good outcomes. The purpose, or goal was met because there was a well-planned strategy which was well executed in a timely manner. Thus, affirming GOOD INTENTIONS and PLANNING AND EXECUTION are critical elements in the implementation of appropriate and good business development strategy.

Why can a business development strategy be good but fail to meet its expectations? Improper planning AND execution of any strategy leads to poor results and expectations. Achievement of good outcomes is not realized by just good intentions and believing there’s a good and appropriate strategy. Also, assuring the correct benchmarks do not mean good outcomes will be realized automatically.

Success requires proper planning and precise execution of strategy with timeliness. The strategy must be well defined and, must include all details for implementation. After all, it is the roadmap for achieving the desired outcome. Good Intentions Alone Do Not Guarantee Successful Outcomes in Business Development Strategies.
